Seneke means "Cultivation" in the Malinke language. Cultivation of the mind is what we seek to express in our work and to touch in our audiences. Locally, or on tour, Seneke West African Percussion Ensemble offers varies range's of artistic experiences including performances, residences & artistic training.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Our residence activities are a partnership between Seneke, the presenter and the community. We collaborate in formulating and implementing activities that respond to the unique needs of each audience.

 Concerts


Features our company performing selected works from our extensive repertoire. 

 

 


 Ensemble Performances


Thirty to sixty minute performances suitable for small audiences, weddings, receptions, schools, and diverse facilities.

 


 Lecture/Demonstrations


Combines dance, music and audience participation with discussions of history and folklore.

 

 

 

 In-school Residences


Bringing dance and music instruction into
the classroom. Teacher in-service workshops are also available.

 

 

 

HAMIDOU KOIVOGUI 

 

Hamidou was born in the village of Macenta in Guinea West Africa, and he grew up playing drums made out of barrels with his friends. During revolution he was chosen to become a dancer first

in a neighboring city, then was brought to the capital city, Conakry, where he spent the next two years competing as a dancer. He then joined the Ballets Nationale Joliba, where he spent twelve

years as a dancer and acrobat. The best dancers from this group were chosen to join the world-renowned Les Ballets Africains, where he spent the next five years touring the world as an acrobat and dancer. He finally decided to move to the United States to teach dance and drumming, and has been here for seven years between New York City, Cincinnati, and Columbia. Hamidou is currently is a Choreographer for Seneke West African Percussion Ensemble. Hamidou speaks six languages: French, English, Susu, Toma, Toma-Mania, and Maninka, and travels the country sharing his passion of dancing, drumming, and his culture of Guinea.
